On Saturday, October 21, 2017, Independent Living, Inc. held its 30th Anniversary Gala: “The Magic of Freedom…The Journey Continues”, at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor, NY in celebration of 30 years of services to individuals with disabilities and their families in the Mid-Hudson region. The gala, which is held every five years, attracted approximately 300 guests who enjoyed an evening of delectable food, good music, dancing and a silent auction to support programs and services offered by Independent Living, Inc. Our honorees were: Jonah Mandelbaum, for his commitment to provide safe, accessible and affordable housing for people with disabilities, seniors and low-income families; and Harvey Rosenthal, for being a devout leader and advocate dedicated to promoting wellness, recovery, rehabilitation and rights of New Yorkers with psychiatric disabilities.
Independent Living, Inc.’s President and CEO, Doug Hovey, noted many positive changes toward acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities as a result of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that was
passed in 1990 and innovative technology; however, much remains
to be done to ensure that people with disabilities have equal rights
