Changing Attitudes About
Long-Term Care

"If most people don’t plan to go into nursing homes… then why are there 160,000 New Yorkers living in them?"

DID YOU KNOW:

  • New York State spends $12 Billion each year on Long Term Care and your tax dollars are the primary source of revenue.

49% Nursing Homes

18% Other Institutional Care

7%Home Health

4% Personal Care

12% HCBS Waiver

  • The aging of the population is expected to result in a tripling of National long-term care expenditures in the next 40 years from $127 Billion to 371 billion annually.
  • Studies consistently found that the delivery of community based, long-term care services is a cost effective alternative to nursing homes. Annual cost estimates in 2000 were $13,000 for adult day care, $28,000 for home care, $45,000 for assisted living and $80 - $100,000 for nursing homes.
  • On average, it costs 33% - 75% less to support someone in the community than in a nursing home.
  • Spending for home and community-based services through Medicaid waiver programs averaged $485 per month per recipient compared to $2,426 per month for nursing home services.
  • Despite the trend toward community based care as opposed to institutionalized care, only 18.2% of long-term care expenditures for the elderly are for community based care.
  • If you or your spouse go into a nursing home, the state can take 50% of your household assets.
  • 77% of Americans over the age of 65 report having a significant physical, sensory, or mental disability.
  • The number one reason for nursing home placement is the inability to ambulate.
  • Most but not all persons in need of long-term care are elderly. Approximately 53% are persons aged 65 and older (6.4 million); 44% are working-age adults aged 18 to 64 (5.3 million); and 3% are children under age 18.
