Developmental Disabilities

Independent Living offers an array of services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in the Hudson Valley, including education advocacy and transition supports for students between the ages of 6 and 21, an after-school learning enrichment program, a Community Independence Program that offers independent living skills training, and a Saturday activity/respite program.

Services for individuals with disabilities and their families include:

Community Independence Program

Fundamental to the Community Independence Program is the belief that individuals with developmental disabilities can and should be given the opportunity to determine the content and character of the service they receive, identify the goals to which they aspire, and choose the individuals that would provide them with assistance in identifying and attaining their goals.

Learning Enrichment After-School Program

LEAP is a free Learning Enrichment After-School Program provided by Independent Living, Inc. that serves individuals with developmental disabilities from Newburgh and neighboring communities.

Participants who are in the enrichment program will receive one-on-one assistance from qualified staff. Participants will also be involved in an array of activities.

Education Advocacy

Provides outreach and advocacy services to families of students between the ages of 6 and 21 with developmental disabilities throughout Orange County that have historically been underserved because of language and/or cultural barriers, or due to their lack of basic information about their child’s rights and their role in protecting them.

Provides individualized support aimed at addressing the challenges associated with ensuring that students with developmental disabilities are given every opportunity to receive a complete and appropriate education while attending school.

Saturday Activity Program

Open to anyone ages 6-25 with a developmental disability, this is a drop-off afternoon program for recreation and socialization with peers. Our staff is trained to work with participants who have special needs. We believe that all persons, regardless of disability, have the right to fully participate in community life. All activities are based upon the interests and preferences of the program participants.
